Biden formally announces run for second term
President Joe Biden said he would run for reelection in a three-minute video released Tuesday. The video highlights issues like abortion, social security, and voting laws, interspersed with images of the Jan. 6 capitol riot. In the video, Biden asks voters to let him “finish this job.” If 80-year-old Biden, America’s oldest president, is reelected and serves to the end of a second term, he would leave office at age 86.
Who else has announced their run? For the Democratic Party primary, Biden will compete with Marianne Williamson, a self-help author, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who runs a nonprofit known for being critical of the COVID-19 vaccine. Republican Party candidates who have announced include former President Donald Trump, former governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, and Larry Elder, a conservative radio talk show host. Other GOP candidates are Michigan businessman Perry Johnson, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Rhode Island Mayor Steve Laffey.
