Trump announces 2024 presidential run
Former President Donald Trump said that he will run for the third time “to make America great and glorious again.” At an event at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Fla., he touted his record as president. He emphasized his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and said the war in Ukraine would not have begun if he were president. He also criticized President Joe Biden’s economic and foreign policy record.
Will Republicans embrace Trump? The announcement follows a disappointing midterm election for the GOP, including losses by several key candidates he endorsed. Still, Republicans are expected to take control of the U.S. House—something for which Trump claimed some responsibility. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis could challenge Trump for the Republican nomination in 2024. Former Vice President Mike Pence has also teased that he might run for president.
