GM recalls nearly 600,000 U.S.-based vehicles over engine failure risk

General Motors recalled 597,630 U.S.-based vehicles from its Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands due to possible manufacturing defects that could cause engine failure. Recall documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say the vehicles share a 6.2L V8 gas engine that may have defective connecting rod or crankshaft components.

Dealers will inspect and repair or replace engines for free. If the affected vehicles’ engines pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil and replace the oil filter, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Which specific models are recalled?

  • 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

  • 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe

  • 2021-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL

What warning signs should drivers watch out for? Drivers may hear loud knocking or banging noises or see the check engine light come on prior to engine failure. Vehicles may also fail to start, shift gears abnormally, or move slowly, according to recall documents.
