White House to cut AI regulations under new plan

The White House on Wednesday evening released its artificial intelligence action plan. The government will work to remove federal regulations that are onerous and could hinder AI development, according to the document. It will seek input from the private sector on which rules to remove. The Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Science and Technology Policy will spearhead deregulation efforts. Federal Trade Commission rulings and active investigations that increase liability for AI companies are under review, according to the plan.

The United States must maintain technological dominance to win a global AI race and uphold national security, President Donald Trump said. The document includes about 90 policy recommendations that the White House plans to implement in the next few weeks and months, it said in a news release.

What other actions has the White House called for?

  1. The government will expedite permits for new data centers and semiconductor factories. It will also create initiatives to increase the nationwide number of electricians and HVAC technicians.

  2. Federal government guidelines will be checked to ensure the government only contracts with developers who ensure their large-language AI models are objective and free from top-down ideological bias.

  3. The Commerce and State Departments will partner with AI companies to export American AI technology to U.S. allies. Export packages will include hardware, AI models, software, and applications.

  4. Defense and intelligence agencies will regularly assess their departments’ level of AI adoption compared to the national security establishments of U.S. competitors and adversaries.
