The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office in southeast Texas on Sunday accused a 31-year-old mother of shooting her four children in Angleton the day before. Two victims, a 13-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Sunday statement. The remaining victims—an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl—were airlifted to a Houston-area hospital and were in stable condition, police said.
Authorities arrested Oninda Romelus as a suspect in the shooting and set her total bond at $14 million. She faced two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman described the attack as a senseless tragedy in a statement on Sunday. Investigators will make every effort to win justice for the children, he wrote.
Why would Romelus allegedly shoot her own kids? Police did not offer details on the suspect’s motives. Romelus called police to the scene of a shooting that took place inside a car just before 5 a.m. local time, Stallman said at a Sunday press conference. The surviving children have been interviewed, and they are expected to cooperate with investigators, Stallman said.
Police in Brazoria County, where the crime occurred, are investigating the attack alongside officials from Montgomery County, where Romelus resided. WORLD reached out to officials from both counties for more details on the investigation and did not receive an immediate reply.
