White House reschedules correspondents’ dinner for July
The annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner for political reporters has been rescheduled for July 24, according to a Tuesday statement from White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang. The upcoming dinner will make history, just like the first dinner, Jiang wrote. The association refused to let violence have the last word, especially on the 250th anniversary of the American spirit, she added.
The dinner, first scheduled for April 25, was cut short after an armed man allegedly opened fire and charged a security checkpoint outside the event. The suspected gunman pleaded not guilty last month to prosecutors’ charges of attempted presidential assassination.
Will the president still attend? President Donald Trump released a Tuesday statement confirming that he would attend and speak at the dinner. The rescheduling showed fortitude and strength by not allowing lunatics to dictate the American way of life, Trump wrote. The president was unsure whether he planned to deliver the same remarks, characterizing the remarks he drafted for the last dinner as nasty toward some people. He added that the planned location is the Waldorf Astoria.
