U.S. finishes Olympics at top of medal count

President Joe Biden paid tribute to U.S. Olympic athletes over the weekend as the Summer Games came to a close. “I don’t think you’ll appreciate until you get home how proud you made America,” he said during a livestreamed virtual reception with athletes. The United States won the most gold medals with 39—one more than China—and had 113 medals total, the most of any country.

What were the highlights of the final week? American runner Allyson Felix won her 11th career Olympic medal, breaking the record for a U.S. athlete in track and field set by Carl Lewis in 1996. The United States won gold in men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. The U.S. baseball team lost to Japan in the final game to take silver. Nelly Korda of Florida won an individual gold medal in women’s golf, and Tamyra Mensah-Stock of Chicago took gold in women’s wrestling.
