Too much winter, not enough games

Punishing winter weather in Pyeongchang, South Korea, has made conditions brutal for some Olympic events and impossible for others. Officials are reworking the schedule for Alpine skiing, the start of which was canceled Sunday amid heavy snowfall and high winds. Those conditions made a mess of the women’s slopestyle snowboarding event Monday. The slope and ramps were so icy that 41 of 50 runs ended in falls or the riders simply giving up. American Jamie Anderson took gold with a conservative run that probably couldn’t have won under normal competition conditions. On Sunday, 17-year-old Red Gerard won the United States’ first gold medal of the games in the men’s slopestyle event. Conditions then were windy but not unbearable, snowboarders said, and Gerard summed up his experience this way: “Just having fun snowboarding.”
