Rolling Stone settles with frat named in debunked story

The University of Virginia fraternity named in the now-debunked Rolling Stone article about an on-campus rape has settled its lawsuit against the magazine for $1.65 million. Lawyers for the Virginia Alpha Chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity had asked for $25 million. The 2014 article accused fraternity members of enabling and then attempting to hide a gang rape in its house following a party. A fraternity spokesman said the group plans to donate part of the money to organizations that provide sexual assault awareness education, prevention training, and victim counseling services. Rolling Stone eventually retracted the story, and a jury awarded $3 million to a university administrator who claimed the magazine defamed her.
