Republicans refer Santos expulsion to Ethics Committee

On Tuesday, Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., introduced a resolution to eject Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., from Congress and required Republican leaders to schedule a vote by Thursday. But on Wednesday evening, the House voted 221-204 along party lines to refer the resolution to the House Committee on Ethics. The committee has been investigating Santos since early March. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he would not back Santos’ bid for reelection.

Why is Santos in trouble? A federal grand jury indicted the freshman congressman on seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, and one count of theft of public funds. Prosecutors also charged him with two counts of lying to Congress. Last year, Santos admitted to lying about his education and career.
