U.S. Rep.-elect Santos under investigation for election claims, finances
U.S. Representative-elect George Santos, R-N.Y., is under investigation by Long Island prosecutors over false claims he made about himself while campaigning. Santos has come under fire for making claims about his family history, education, and professional experience that were revealed to be false. Federal prosecutors in New York are also investigating his finances, CNN reported. He was elected to the state’s third congressional district in November.
What has Santos admitted, and what are his plans? Santos has admitted to lying about receiving a college degree and details of his family background and professional career. Santos suggested in a tweet Wednesday that he still intends to take office. If Santos assumes office when the House reconvenes on Jan. 3, he could face additional investigations by the House Committee on Ethics and the Justice Department.
