Political shows and snark dominate Emmys
The winners at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards stuck to a consistent theme in their acceptance speeches: Trump bad, TV good. Host Stephen Colbert, who skewers President Donald Trump daily on his late-night talk show, made some of the evening’s most caustic remarks, including, “Unlike the presidency, the Emmys go to the winner of the popular vote.” Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer made a self-deprecating cameo appearance, but viewers were unamused. The night’s two biggest winners were politically charged stories: The Handmaid’s Tale, a modernized version of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, won best drama and Veep, an HBO series about an incompetent politician, won best comedy. Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the Emmy for best actress in a comedy for the sixth year in a row, which, including her previous wins for Seinfeld and New Adventures of Old Christine, tied her with Cloris Leachman for the most acting Emmys ever.
