Philadelphia celebrates first Super Bowl win
The Philadelphia Eagles upset the New England Patriots Sunday night to capture the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship. Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles, a former backup, was the game’s MVP, throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass thrown by tight end Trey Burton in the 41-33 record-setting win. The teams combined for 1,151 yards, the most in any game in NFL history. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, the league’s MVP, threw for 505 yards and three scores in the losing effort. The game marked the eighth Super Bowl appearance for Brady and New England head coach Bill Belichick, giving them a 5-3 record. The Eagles were favorites to make it to the Super Bowl for most the fall until their star quarterback Carson Wentz went down with a season-ending injury in December. A year ago, Foles thought about walking away from the game but now he’s a hero in Philadelphia. “The big thing that helped me is knowing I didn’t have to be Superman,” he said after the game. “I had amazing teammates, amazing coaches around me.” Eagles fans celebrated long into the night, breaking storefront windows, climbing on light posts, and dancing in the streets. Philadelphia police reportedly requested assistance from Homeland Security and the National Guard as Eagles fans rioted in the city.
