The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors plans to establish an award recognizing designers of stunt sequences by 2028, according to a Thursday statement. Stunts have always added to the magic of movies, the Academy wrote in a social media post the same day. Over 100 stunt professionals hold membership in the Academy’s production and technology branch, according to the statement. Other prime-time award shows like the Emmys include awards for stunt performance and coordination, while the Screen Actors Guild Awards recognize stunt ensembles.
How will the category be judged? The Academy plans to share more about the award at a later date and noted that the category’s full rules will be shared in 2027, in time for the Academy’s 100th ceremony in 2028. The Academy announced another new award category last year, achievement in casting, which will be implemented at the 2026 ceremony for films released in 2025.
