Michigan State AD leaving over Nassar crimes

Michigan State University athletic director Mark Hollis has resigned in the wake of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. Hollis, who held the position for 10 years, announced his retirement Friday. Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon stepped down Wednesday amid complaints the school missed chances to stop Nassar, who was convicted of molesting some of gymnastics’ top athletes while working for the college and for USA Gymnastics. A judge on Wednesday sentenced Nassar to decades in prison, and he faces lawsuits from more than 130 women and girls. Hollis said Friday he was retiring now “because I care. … When you look at the scope of everything, that’s the reason I made a choice to retire now. And I hope that has a little bit, a little bit, of helping that healing process.” Michigan State’s governing board on Friday has its first public meeting since Simon’s resignation. Trustees plan to discuss the presidential transition as the university prepares for new investigations by the state attorney general, state lawmakers, and the NCAA.
