LA Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs found dead at 27

Tyler Skaggs, a pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, was found dead Monday in his hotel room in Southlake, Texas, where his team was in town to play the Texas Rangers. He was 27. Authorities have not confirmed a cause of death but do not suspect foul play. The Angels and Rangers postponed their game scheduled for later that day. “Words cannot express the deep sadness we feel right now,” All-Star Angels center fielder Mike Trout tweeted. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Carli [Skaggs’s wife] and their families. Remembering him as a great teammate, friend, and person who will forever remain in our hearts … we love you, 45.” Skaggs married Carli in December and would have turned 28 next week. He was 7-7 with a 4.29 ERA in his 15 starts this season.

“I just had lunch with Tyler a couple weeks ago,” tweeted former New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes. “We talked pitching, life. He was so excited about the season. Absolutely gutted. I’m sick.”

Dozens of Angels fans in California left flowers, baseballs, caps, and other equipment outside Angel Stadium of Anaheim to create a memorial mound.
