King Charles III crowned amid celebration, protests
Britain’s new king said on Saturday at his coronation that he came “not to be served but to serve.” Outside Westminster Abbey, spectators, supporters, and protesters gathered. Many celebrated the occasion, others sought to take part in a historic moment, and some declared Charles “not my king!” Police arrested more than 50 protesters.
How does this event compare to previous coronations? Charles’ coronation was shorter and smaller than his mother’s, Queen Elizabeth II. Where Elizabeth’s coronation had 8,000 attendees, Charles’ had only 2,000. His also lasted only two hours, whereas his mother’s lasted three hours. Charles’ wife, Camilla, was also crowned. She will now go by “Queen Camilla” rather than “Queen Consort.”
