Jimmy Carter’s spirit “as strong as ever” one year after hospice care admittance

Sunday marked one year since former President Jimmy Carter entered hospice care. His grandson, Jason, marked the occasion by sharing an update on his condition. He admitted that, “on a daily basis we have no expectations for his body, but we know that his spirit is as strong as ever.” Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley also confirmed that Carter is “alert and eating” and can “understand what's going on around him.” Carter is now the longest-lived U.S. president at 99 years old and has survived several health scares, including metastatic brain cancer and liver cancer. About nine months after Carter entered hospice, his wife of 77 years, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, passed away.

Is he currently in hospice? The Carter Family has not disclosed exactly why the former president was placed in hospice or if he still remains in end-of-life care. The family did release a statement over the weekend, saying they are glad that the former president’s decision to enter hospice last year “sparked so many family discussions across the country on an important subject.”
