Japanese-British novelist wins Nobel for literature

British author Kazuo Ishiguro, who penned The Remains of the Day and other novels, won the Nobel Literature Prize on Thursday. The Swedish Academy, which awards the prize, called Ishiguro’s eight books works of emotional force that uncover “the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.” Ishiguro, 62, was born in Nagasaki, Japan, and moved to Britain with his family when he was 5. He has written stories set in both countries. The 1993 film adaptation of The Remains of the Day starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson was nominated for eight Academy Awards.
