Grammys honor women, rappers

Rappers and women scored groundbreaking victories Sunday night in Los Angeles at the 61st annual Grammy Awards. The night’s most prestigious honors went to country singer Kacey Musgraves, who won album of the year for Golden Hour, and rapper Childish Gambino, who received the record and song of the year awards for “This is America.” Until last night, a rap song had never won in those two categories. Childish Gambino, whose real name is Donald Glover, did not attend the ceremony, possibly in protest of the Grammys’ previous failure to recognize rap with a major award, some speculated.

Cardi B became the first solo female performer to win best rap album, and singer Dua Lipa won best new artist. The show also featured tributes to music icons Dolly Parton and Diana Ross. Best contemporary Christian music album went to Lauren Daigle for Look Up Child. She also won CCM song for “You Say,” while Tori Kelly won best gospel album for Hiding Place.
