Florida hunkers down ahead of Hermine
Residents of and visitors to Florida’s Gulf Coast are bracing for Tropical Storm Hermine, which is expected to make landfall tonight or early Friday. By the time it reaches land, the storm could reach hurricane strength. Officials have issued mandatory evacuation notices for low-lying areas along the coast. Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to evacuate. After making landfall, Hermine is expected to move north-east across Florida’s panhandle toward the Carolinas, making for a wet Labor Day weekend. The approaching storm has prompted many school districts in neighboring South Carolina to move football games to tonight in anticipation of flooding, especially in the Charleston area.
