Amazon will not display itemized tariff charges on orders, company says

Despite earlier reports, Jeff Bezos says Amazon will not show itemized order surcharges prompted by President Donald Trump’s tariffs, the president told the media on Tuesday. Punchbowl News reported earlier Tuesday morning that Amazon planned to roll out a new display in its online shopping platform to denote the item’s price, separate from the tariff fees imposed on customers. Bezos is a good guy, Trump said. He did the right thing and solved the problem very quickly, he added.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed Bezos after a reporter asked her about the initial reports during a news conference earlier Tuesday morning. She described the new policy as a hostile political attack and questioned why Amazon didn’t note price changes from inflation under former President Joe Biden. She went on to accuse Amazon of partnering with a Chinese propaganda arm and said that was just another reason for consumers to buy American and why the manufacturing supply chain needs to come back home.

What has Amazon said? The company never planned to show tariff charges on its main website, a company spokesperson told CNBC. The budget-friendly shopping section considered listing additional charges for imports on certain products, but that plan was never approved, they added. Amazon’s stocks briefly dipped after Leavitt’s comments, but recovered by the early afternoon, CNBC reported.
