First look from set of Noah film with Russell Crowe

Last week, Darren Aronofsky tweeted the first photo from the set of Noah - a life-sized ark his crew is currently building.

Along with the photo, the director of Oscar-winning films like The Wrestler and The Black Swan commented, "I dreamt about this since I was 13. And now it's a reality. Genesis 6:14."

While that sentiment may sound encouraging to Christian movie-lovers who've been longing to see biblical epics return to the big screen, some of his other statements leave room for concern that he doesn't appreciate the spiritual meaning of his subject matter. "I think it's really timely because it's about environmental apocalypse which is the biggest theme," he said of the project in 2008, adding "Noah was the first environmentalist."

In a separate interview with the Independent Film Channel Aronofsky also commented, "I don't think it's a very religious story. I think it's a great fable that's part of so many different religions and spiritual practices."

At least we can take comfort that whatever else Noah ends up being, it will be well acted. Paramount also announced that Sir Anthony Hopkins will be taking on the role of Methuselah, Noah's grandfather. Hopkins joins Russell Crowe in the titular role.
