FBI investigating voter registration system hack attacks
As Arizona voters head to the polls for the state’s primaries today, FBI agents are investigating a foreign hack attack on its voter registration system. The hackers, apparently from Russia, introduced malware into the system but did not successfully steal any data. Hackers had more success in Illinois, where an attack in July took its voter registration system offline for 10 days and netted the cyber criminals information on 200,000 voters. Although the attacks didn’t target actual voting systems, they have renewed concerns that election results on electronic voting machines could be remotely altered. They also play into the ongoing narrative of Russian interference in U.S. elections. Earlier this year, Russian hackers broke into the Democratic National Committee’s email system, releasing embarrassing emails that led to the party chairman’s resignation.
