Donald Sutherland, star of M-A-S-H and The Hunger Games, dies at 88
Kiefer Sutherland announced the death of his father, Donald Sutherland, in a social media post on Thursday, calling him one of the most important actors in film. He was never daunted by a role and loved what he did, Kiefer Sutherland wrote. Donald Sutherland received many awards across his decades-long career, including one Emmy, two Golden Globes, and an honorary Academy Award. The Canadian-born actor gained fame for his role as Hawkeye Pierce in the 1970 movie M-A-S-H and as Sergeant Oddball in Clint Eastwood’s Kelly’s Heroes.
What other films was he in? Donald Sutherland portrayed a wide cast of characters, from Detective John Klute in the psychological thriller Klute to the pot-smoking Professor Jennings in Animal House. Younger audiences may know Donald Sutherland as President Snow from the Hunger Games movie trilogy or as Mr. Bennet from the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. His cause of death has not been shared. Donald Sutherland is survived by his third wife, Francine Racette, five children, and four grandchildren.
