Country star Hillary Scott shares grief over miscarriage in new song
Lady Antebellum singer cries out to God, references Scripture in latest hit
When country trio Lady Antebellum took a break last year, singer Hillary Scott thought it was time to finally work on her passion project—an album of hymns featuring her equally talented musical family.
Instead, Scott found herself at the most broken point in her life as she suffered the loss of her unborn child to miscarriage.
Scott channeled her grief by writing a letter to God about her pain. The result is the song, “Thy Will,” released Friday.
The song quickly resonated with fans—topping Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs and Christian Digital Songs charts. It even crossed over to the country charts.
The lamentation features a pairing of Scott’s voice, piano, and strings with lyrical themes from Jeremiah 29:11 and Matthew 26:42. “Thy Will” is one of several tunes on the new album featuring Scott’s family, The Whites, produced by family friend and bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs.
Skaggs said Scott pushed herself through tears to record “Thy Will.” Scott said it was important to grieve the loss of her unborn baby with her fans: “I fully believe that God showed up that day and we were pass-throughs for a message that He knew, and I quickly saw, that a lot of people needed to hear.”
The 30-year-old said silence was not an option.
“I just had to go in with a hammer and bust that out because I knew that this was something that was going to be a part of me for the rest of my life,” she said.
The Whites’ family faith album, Love Remains, includes 13 tracks across multiple genres—from contemporary Christian pop to country, with distinct nods to bluegrass, Southern spirituals, and traditional gospel music.
Scott has used social media to reach out to other women grieving the loss of their unborn children—including a new Bible devotional based on the album. Scott and her husband Chris have a 3-year-old daughter, Eisele Kay.
