Actor Ed Asner dies


Ed Asner, who played the gruff newsman Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show died Sunday. He was 91.

What was his career like? Asner was born in Kansas City, Mo., and moved to New York after serving in the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps during the Korean War. Before landing the role of Grant in 1970, he held a few stage roles and some TV appearances. He eventually claimed 390 film credits, including as Santa Claus in the movie Elf. After Mary Tyler Moore ended, he carried on the role of Grant in a spin-off named after the character. He became the only actor to win Emmys for both comedy and drama playing the same role. Asner married and divorced twice. He is survived by two sons, two daughters, and 10 grandchildren.
