A tale of two Heisman quarterbacks: Manziel and Tebow

Johnny Manziel’s offseason troubles have not carried over to the gridiron, as the 2012 Heisman Trophy-winner has been spectacular, leading Texas A&M to two consecutive blowout victories to begin the season. In Saturday’s 65-28 win over Sam Houston State, Manziel threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 36 yards and another touchdown.

The 20-year-old made headlines throughout the offseason for reckless behavior, including gambling, sending out profanity-laced tweets, and sleeping through meetings at the Manning Passing Academy meetings. The NCAA suspended Manziel for half of Texas A&M’s opening game against Rice for violating NCAA bylaws regarding autographs.

“The biggest thing that’s helped probably is just being around these guys, being in this building and having my teammates and still being able to be around them,” Manziel said.

Manziel faces his toughest test yet this season when the Aggies take on the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 2007 Heisman Trophy-winner Tim Tebow is still looking for work in the National Football League. After the New England Patriots released Tebow last week, no team has expressed interest in him as a quarterback. But one team reportedly reached out to Tebow asking him to change positions, but Tebow refused to make the switch.

Former NFL quarterback and outspoken Christian Kurt Warner, appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, offered some advice for Tebow: Go play in the Canadian Football League or the Arena Football League. After the Green Bay Packers cut Warner in 1994, no NFL team offered him a contract, so he turned to the Arena Football League. Warner was so impressive playing arena football the NFL’s St. Louis Rams soon offered him a contract. He later went on to win two NFL Most Valuable Player Awards and two Super Bowl championships.

Warner said being cut by the Patriots might be a blessing in disguise for Tebow. Instead of sitting on the bench while Tom Brady played quarterback all season, Tebow has the opportunity to play full time, even if it’s not in the NFL.

“I know you want to play in the NFL, but right now you need to find places to hone your craft,” Warner said on the program. “Whether that’s Canada, whether that’s the Arena League, whether that’s anywhere else, I would encourage him, whatever the opportunity is, to take advantage of it and go play as much football as you can.”
