A mother's glove

Virginia mom's foul ball snare becomes Internet sensation

By now, most of you have already seen the picture.

Tiffany Goodwin, 31, grabbing a foul ball with the glove on her left hand while firmly holding her 8-month old son, Jerry, with her right.

The Fredericksburg resident calmly reached over several other spectators, including her husband, Allen, to make the catch at a Richmond Flying Squirrels game on May 15th.

"I jumped up, and I was able to catch it," Tiffany told ESPN. "I was afraid at what angle it was coming, if it was going to hit the kids or not."

The photo took the Internet by storm, much to the surprise of the Goodwins. They didn't realize how popular the catch was for several days after losing Internet access due to fierce Virginia thunderstorms.

"I didn't realize it had spread to all these different places," said Goodwin, according to Inside Nova. "I was kind of shocked to see the responses."

The picture was taken by Mark Gormus of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, who told ESPN that he knew right away the picture was special.

"I love shooting baseball, but it's one of the most difficult sports, I think, to get a really nice photograph of a different moment," Gornus told ESPN. "In baseball, you might have one moment to get that visually interesting moment of the game. For years, I've always followed the ball into the stands. People's reactions when there's a foul ball, from complete horror, to indifference, to people reaching for the ball, are always a nice little slice of life."

In the photo, Tiffany's husband, Allen, is also reaching for the ball; both parents are reaching over their 3-year-old daughter, Katherine, and 7-year-old daughter, Elizabeth.

"I always bring a glove to protect the kids in case the ball comes in our direction," Tiffany told ESPN.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
