Zelenskyy pleads for weapons, EU membership

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday addressed the European Parliament in Brussels before attending a summit with European Union heads of state. The meetings are part of Zelenskyy’s last stop in his surprise international trip after Wednesday’s stops in London and Paris. The Ukrainian leader has been campaigning for additional military support as the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion approaches and Kyiv anticipates a new offensive by Moscow.

What is Zelenskyy asking for? Kyiv has renewed requests for combat aircraft. Officials in the United Kingdom on Wednesday confirmed that British troops will begin training Ukrainian pilots to fly fighter jets. Zelenskyy also urged European leaders to expedite Ukraine’s application for membership in the EU, a process that typically takes several years.
