Naval Station Norfolk returned to normal operations early Tuesday morning after implementing a partial lockdown on Monday night. Among other security measures, officials closed some of the base’s entry gates and reduced open lanes at others. The measures were to ensure the safety and security of the base’s personnel, the station said in a statement. The Navy site in Norfolk, Va., is the world’s largest naval complex, according to its website.

Officials did not disclose what threat or development prompted them to tighten security. They closely monitored the situation in coordination with law enforcement and security partners, according to the statement. Navy Region Mid Atlantic did not immediately return a request for comment.
