Vice President-elect J.D. Vance on Monday confirmed that President-elect Donald Trump had picked Stephen Miller, an adviser from Trump’s previous administration, to be his deputy chief of staff for policy. Since serving in the White House, Miller has led America First Legal, a conservative nonprofit group. Vance described the choice as fantastic. Since it’s not a Cabinet position, Miller does not need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, Sen. Eric Schmitt on Monday confirmed that he’d withdrawn his name from the pool of candidates hoping to be attorney general.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., on Sunday agreed to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. President-elect Donald Trump nominated her for the role, he confirmed in a statement to The New York Post. Stefanik also accepted The Post reported. Stefanik’s appointment comes as the president-elect begins to solidify his cabinet roster following his recent victory in the 2024 presidential election.
Has Trump made any other notable appointments? Trump on Monday said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Tom Homan would serve as his Border Czar, in a statement posted to social media. Vice President Kamala Harris took flak from Republicans for her alleged failure to secure the southern border after U.S. President Joe Biden appointed her border czar.
Trump said in a separate social media statement that he would not invite former United Nations ambassador and Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley to join his staff. He also wouldn’t invite former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo into his administration. Both served with him when he last occupied the White House. Trump added that he’d enjoyed working with both of them, and thanked them for their prior service to the country.
