Suspect arrested in shooting of Los Angeles bishop

Police on Monday arrested 65-year-old Carlos Medina in connection with the shooting death of Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell. The 69-year-old bishop was found fatally shot on Saturday at his Hacienda Heights home east of Los Angeles. Medina is the husband of O’Connell’s housekeeper and was arrested at his home. It was unclear on Tuesday if he had hired an attorney to speak on his behalf, and officials have not made formal charges against him.

Who was Bishop O’Connell? O’Connell was originally from Ireland and was ordained to serve the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 1979. He founded and led the SoCal Immigration Task Force to coordinate the local church’s support for migrant children that entered the United States without adult companions. Pope Francis named O’Connell an auxiliary bishop in 2015.
