State gun laws face likely revisions after court ruling

States such as California, Rhode Island, and Hawaii may be forced to amend their regulations on firearms licenses to conform to the high court’s Thursday ruling. The decision struck down a New York law that prohibited individuals from carrying guns in public places unless they had demonstrated some need to do so. Now, similar state laws elsewhere are open to legal challenges from pro-gun rights groups and individuals.

How are states reacting? California is currently revising its laws to bolster the requirements individuals have to meet in order to obtain a concealed carry permit, and expanding the list of places that guns will be outright prohibited — such as schools. Hawaii is considering a similar strategy. Most states have already ended their legislative sessions this year, so revising their laws might take some time.
