Slotkin wins Michigan’s razor-thin U.S. Senate race
Democratic candidate Rep. Elissa Slotkin won Michigan’s open seat in the U.S. Senate to replace retiring incumbent Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, the Associated Press said Wednesday afternoon. Slotkin won 48.6%, a mere 0.3% edge over GOP challenger Mike Rogers with 48.3%. Slotkin took to social media, thanking voters for their support and promising to be a principled leader for the people. It's an honor to represent Michigan and follow in the footsteps of Sen. Stabenow, Slotkin wrote.
Who is Slotkin? Slotkin began serving in the House in 2019 and has campaigned on lowering prescription drug costs and strengthening supply chains for better Michigan jobs. She began her public service career as a CIA analyst before working in various defense and intelligence positions under the Bush and Obama administrations. In Congress, she notably voted against the Parents Bill of Rights Act and the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. She also cosponsored the Respect for Marriage Act, a 2022 measure that removed gender from the federal definition of marriage to bestow legal rights and privileges afforded only to heterosexual married couples to couples who identify as LGBTQ.
