Senate proposes $118 billion for border, foreign aid

President Joe Biden on Sunday immediately praised the proposed legislation. He said it would help secure the U.S. southern border and improve the immigration system, which he described as “broken.” He also said the package would allow U.S. officials to keep helping Ukraine and Israel.

What’s in this bill? The proposal would allot about $20 billion for securing the U.S. southern border, $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, and $14 billion in aid to Israel. Biden asked for roughly $100 billion for those areas last year. House Republicans rejected the Senate’s pitch, calling for more transformative policy changes at the border. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Saturday proposed a bill to send $17.6 billion in military aid to Israel.
