Sen. McConnell hospitalized over the weekend
Longtime Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning, a spokesman told media outlets. The Republican senator from Kentucky was receiving excellent care, the spokesman added. He did not provide details on what led to McConnell’s hospitalization or which medical center he was at.
McConnell, age 84, has dealt with a string of medical incidents in recent years, including falls in Washington on recent years, and he has frozen up mid-sentence while speaking publicly. In February, he checked himself into a hospital for more than a week after experiencing flu-like symptoms.
He made U.S. history as the longest-serving Senate party leader, but stepped down from the post in November 2024 while continuing to serve as a lawmaker. He has held his Senate seat since 1985. He has planned to completely retire from the U.S. Senate in early 2027.
