SCOTUS again rejects Trump appeal of E. Jean Carroll verdict
The Supreme Court once again opted not to hear President Donald Trump’s appeal to overturn a $5 million verdict in a civil case brought by the columnist and former TV host. E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuit accused the president of sexual abuse and defamation. The Supreme Court denied the appeal according to an order list released on Monday. The court’s one-line denial offered no rationale behind the decision to allow the ruling in favor of Carroll to stand, and didn’t say if any of the justices dissented with the majority decision. SCOTUS previously rejected Trump’s first appeal for review in late June, again with no explanation or dissents noted.
Carroll separately received an additional $83.3 million judgment in a trial for defamatory statements Trump made after she published a memoir accusing the president of sexual abuse. The president and the U.S. Justice Department are also challenging that verdict.
