SCOTUS declines to review $5M sex assault verdict against Trump
The nation’s highest court will not hear President Donald Trump’s appeal to overturn a $5 million sexual assault and defamation verdict, according to an order list released on Monday. The court offered no rationale behind the decision allowing the ruling in favor of alleged victim E. Jean Carroll to stand. Also, no dissents against the majority decision were noted.
The $5 million assault and defamation verdict is separate from the $83.3 million judgment awarded to Carroll for defamatory statements Trump made after she published a memoir accusing the president of sexual abuse.
How has Trump responded? Trump released a Monday morning social media statement sharing surprise that the high court rejected his appeal, and characterizing Carroll’s case as an example of weaponization of the law. He vowed to continue fighting what he characterized as the fake case with all his power, insisting that what he described as injustice against a president should not stand.
