Ron DeSantis wins Florida governor’s race

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis retained his position as Florida’s governor on Tuesday according to preliminary numbers from the Associated Press. With roughly 75 percent of all votes counted, DeSantis was winning with about 58 percent to Democrat Charlie Crist’s 41 percent. Third-party candidates and write-ins accounted for the remainder.

Who is DeSantis? He has served as governor of Florida since 2019. He campaigned on battling President Joe Biden’s policies, as well as relaxed COVID-19 regulations. He has fought with Disney over parental rights concerning children in schools—specifically on the legislation that opponents nicknamed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. He has also protested the Biden administration’s immigration policies. His opponent Charlie Crist served as governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011.
