Republicans weigh House speaker candidates
Congressional Republicans on Monday night heard from nine representatives seeking the party’s nomination for speaker of the House. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, lost three House floor votes last week before his GOP colleagues revoked his nomination for the role. Before that, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., received the nomination but withdrew from the running after he couldn’t garner enough support. The House of Representatives has been without a speaker for almost three weeks.
Who is likely to get the nomination? Recently ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has endorsed Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota for the position. Reps. Byron Donalds of Florida, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, and Mike Johnson of Louisiana are running. Democrats are unanimously backing Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Republicans are expected to hold a series of votes Tuesday morning to choose their next nominee.
