Pushing for immigration change, Trump cites NFL player’s death

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump on Tuesday called the death of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson, who was killed Sunday in a car crash with an illegal immigrant, a preventable tragedy. “So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed @Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson,” Trump tweeted. “We must get the Dems to get tough on the Border, and with illegal immigration, FAST!” Indiana State Police said Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit when he crashed into the vehicle carrying Jackson and Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe, 54, who also died. Orrego-Savala is from Guatemala and was deported twice following arrests in San Francisco in 2007 and 2009, The Indianapolis Star reported. Trump is pushing Congress for a compromise on immigration that would reduce the number of legal immigrants permitted into the United States each year and invest $25 billion in border security. The White House has tied the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to the deal. DACA beneficiaries—children brought into the U.S. illegally by their parents—could lose legal status starting March 5 if Congress and the White House don’t agree to a compromise before then.
