Proud Boys member pleads guilty to seditious conspiracy
Jeremy Bertino, a Proud Boys member, is now cooperating with the Department of Justice after pleading guilty to seditious conspiracy Thursday. He is accused of plotting to stop the transition of power from former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden, but he was not at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot because of an injury. The seditious conspiracy charge carries a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Who is Bertino? Bertino is 43 and from North Carolina. The DOJ said Bertino was in contact with the leadership of the Proud Boys, discussing the possibility of storming the Capitol. His statement said that he participated in planning to stop the transition of power, and he understood that it may involve the use of force. The DOJ also said he posted encouraging messages in Proud Boys chats during the riot.
