Protests erupt in Haiti over gas prices

Thousands took to the streets of Port-au-Prince for the second day in a row to protest yet another gas hike. The government announced the increase as citizens are already struggling with high fuel prices, unemployment, and widespread violence. Official fueling stations are largely closed, and the price of gas on the black market is currently $18 per gallon. Protesters are also calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

How bad is the violence? Two Haitian reporters, identified as Tayson Latigue and Frantzsen Charles, were fatally shot and their bodies were set on fire Sunday. The reporters were part of a group of seven journalists investigating worsening violence in the Cite Soleil district of Port-au-Prince, including the recent killing of a 17-year-old girl. Dieudonne St-Cyr, a reporter with Haiti’s Association of Independent Journalists, said the killings took place during an ambush by two warring gangs.
