At least five people were missing on Monday after an avalanche the day before caused sudden flooding in Nepal’s Budhi Gandaki River, according to the Nepali prime minister’s office. Search teams rescued 314 people, including 19 from other countries, the office said. About 200,000 citizens received evacuation warnings.
The floods also damaged more than 200 houses in north-central Nepal, along with several bridges and roads and drinking water and hydropower infrastructure, according to the prime minister’s office. Teams were working to reconstruct bridges and excavate blocked roads, the office said.
The disaster came roughly two months after catastrophic flash floods and mudslides in northern Nepal killed over 1,400 people and left thousands missing.
