Minnesota Supreme Court hears case to block Trump from ballot

The state’s highest court on Thursday heard oral arguments in a lawsuit aimed at removing former President Donald Trump from the ballot in the upcoming March primary. Plaintiffs argued that Trump violated Section Three of the 14th Amendment, known as the insurrection clause, because of his perceived role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Some of the Minnesota justices questioned whether the issue of a candidate’s eligibility should be decided by Congress instead of individual states. Trump’s legal team asked that the lawsuit be dismissed.

Are there similar cases moving through the courts? A five-day evidentiary hearing began Monday in Colorado in a nearly identical case. A Denver judge on Wednesday denied a request from Trump’s team to dismiss the lawsuit. She plans to decide the case by Thanksgiving. Both cases could eventually make their way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
