Milwaukee endures another night of violent protests
Protesters gathered again in Milwaukee last night to demand justice for an African-American man shot by police Saturday afternoon. Initial protests hours after the shooting sparked widespread riots, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker put the National Guard on standby to combat further violence. On Sunday, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said video of the police shooting shows 23-year-old suspect Sylville K. Smith had a gun in his hand when he turned toward the African-American police officer who shot him. Flynn said although the investigation into the shooting continues, the officer appears to have acted within the bounds of the law. During Sunday’s protests, someone shot an 18-year-old man, but police have not said whether it was an officer or another protester. On Saturday, rioters burned six businesses to the ground and police arrested 17 people, while four officers sustained injuries.
