Trump administration to reinstate legal status of foreign students in U.S.

A federal prosecutor confirmed that the government planned to restore student visas recently terminated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Lawyers representing students suing over the terminations reported that government attorneys released a statement that student visas would be reinstated, according to the Associated Press. Swaths of foreign students have had their visas unexpectedly terminated in recent weeks, spurring a number of lawsuits against the government.

Is the reactivation permanent? The reactivation would apply to all student visas, not just the ones for students who filed lawsuits, the report added. Officials used ICE’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information Systems database to locate students with visas and made termination decisions based on records in the FBI’s National Crime Information Center. All visa records will remain active or be reactivated until ICE develops a policy for such terminations, according to the federal prosecutor’s message.
