Lochte apologizes as scandal simmers down

The drama of four American swimmers’ drunken misbehavior in Rio de Janeiro seems to be reaching its final act. The four men claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint, but Brazilian authorities said they actually demolished a gas station bathroom and were confronted by armed security guards. Police have allowed Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz to board flights home after completing interviews. Jimmy Feigen plans to leave Brazil later today after making a $10,800 donation as restitution. And Ryan Lochte, who has been back in the United States since Tuesday, apologized for his behavior and admitted his initial story was not “careful or candid.” Meanwhile, the United States Olympic Committee issued an apology and said the athletes’ behavior was “not acceptable, nor does it represent the values of Team USA.”
