U.K.’s prime minister vows to prove doubters wrong after election losses

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed supporters on Monday and said he took responsibility for major party losses in the country’s local elections late last week. The election results were very tough, and many people are frustrated by Britain’s current state, he said. Starmer acknowledged his many critics, but vowed to prove them wrong.

The Labour Party needed to take responsibility and explain how it can be a better electoral force in the months and years to come, he said. These are dangerous times, and the party is facing dangerous opponents, meaning the United Kingdom will go down a dark path if the Labour Party fails, he said.

Starmer highlighted several of what he characterized as the party’s positive recent steps, including its push to enact national ownership of British Steel to renew the domestic industry and rebuild Britain’s relationship with Europe. Putting the United Kingdom at the heart of Europe will make the country stronger economically and defensively, he said. He also pledged not to allow the United Kingdom to get dragged into a war with Iran.

How bad were the losses? The election took place on Thursday and included about 5,000 seats spread across about 136 local councils across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Final tallying over the weekend showed the Labour Party ending with just over 1,000 seats in local bodies, reflecting a more than 1,200-seat loss.

Reform UK gained over 1,300 seats, Liberal Democrats gained just over 130 seats, and the Green Party gained about 400 seats. The Conservative Party, in power before the Labour Party, lost about 430 seats. Analysts viewed the results as a definitive shift away from the country's traditional two-party system, given that at least four different parties won at least 800 seats each in the latest election.
